ATTENTION ALUMNI'S:

The Alumni Workshop is in full swing. This workshop is for serious writers only. The group is facilitated by graduates of the Literary Workshop and administered by the staff.

The Alumni Workshop is designed for writers who have successfully completed the Literary Workshop program and wish to continue improving their writing skills. Members take turns submitting writing samples and critiquing each other’s work. This workshop is geared to be serious and challenging, but safe and nurturing as well. We hope it will be a place where you can truly grow as a writer.

The Alumni board is divided into two rooms: The Lobby and the main Alumni discussion room. The Lobby is where you can chat about anything you want: post bits of your writing for general comment, joke, vent, and just get to know each other. The Alumni discussion room is reserved strictly for submissions and critiques, as well as any specific questions about the workshop itself.

TO JOIN THE ALUMNI WORKSHOP:

You must have completed the seven-week course and be a graduate of the Literary Workshop in order to participate.

Send your request to: cynthia@literaryworkshop.com

Mentors, Mentors, Mentors Wanted!

The Literary Workshop is seeking mentors to join the team. Mentors are the driving force of support and leadership in our program. They facilitate chats, posts lessons, encourage excellence and guide students through course material. The most rewarding part about being a mentor, you’ll be giving novice writers the benefit of your experience and helping them to become outstanding writers like yourself.

Qualified mentors also provide students with private mentor help. There is a fee of $25.00 associated with this service. As a mentor you will receive $10.00 for every student that request private mentor help under your care.

You don’t need to possess superior writing skills. All you need to have is knowledge of grammar and dialogue and a desire to help others. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to continue doing what you love to do so much and help other up and coming writers in the process. The Literary Workshop is still in its infancy and we would like you to be part of it. If you would like to become a mentor, send your request to:

LEAPFROG PRESS

Submission Guidelines for Authors:

LEAPFROG PRESS, a small independent press in Cape Cod, is currently accepting submissions of book-length fiction, thoughtful, well-written memoirs and narrative non-fiction. Ironically, small independent presses, such as Leapfrog, can be just as difficult to place your work with as the larger presses, simply because their lists are limited and their investment in each title is a significant part of their budget.

Send a query letter briefly describing your project and if you’ve ever been published before. Long synopses and marketing plans are unnecessary and will be discarded. Send no more than the first forty pages of your manuscript.  Address your submissions to Donna Szeker, Acquisitions Editor.

Due to the overwhelming number of submissions LEAPFROG PRESS receives they are no longer able to write back at all unless you enclose a Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope (S.A.S.E.) for a response.

You will not receive an e-mail response. If you would like your forty pages returned, please enclose a postage paid envelope large enough for them to mail it in. Otherwise the paper will be recycled. E-mail queries may be posted to Donna Szeker. Write SUBMISSION in the subject line of the message.

Due to the volume of e-mail queries Leapfrog receives, it may not be possible for them to reply to every one.

If Leapfrog Press feels your manuscript might be of interest to them, they will ask you to send hard copy. If not, you will not get a response.

DO NOT ATTACH YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO AN EMAIL.

ATTACHMENTS WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DELETED.

Your prose should be typed and double-spaced. (This really does matter to their manuscript readers.) Your name and the title should be on every page of the manuscript.  Leapfrog will attempt to respond as quickly as possible but it can take from three to six months. They do not accept multiple submissions.

Please note:

LEAPFROG PRESS is no longer accepting submissions of unsolicited poetry or multiple submissions in any genre. Nor do they generally publish short story collections, cookbooks, children's books, inspirational books, or religious books.

Do you know someone who embodies the spirit of the American woman today? Perhaps it’s your mother, your sister, your best friend, or a teacher at your child’s school. The co-creators of A Day in the Life of the American Woman want to hear their stories! Submit your story or nominate an inspiring American woman you know to be a part of A Day in the Life of the American Woman:

On April 8, 2005, fifty of the world’s best female photojournalists will document an ordinary day in the lives of women across the country for a new book, A Day in the Life of the American Woman (to be published by Bulfinch Press in Fall, 2005). The project is being co-created by Sharon J. Wohlmuth and Carol Saline, the authors of the best-selling books Sisters and Mothers & Daughters.

The project’s editors are looking for stories of intriguing and beloved women—from the well known to the unknown, from the successful to the quietly heart-warming. Award-winning photographers will photograph some of the women for the book, and many more of the stories will be shared with other readers online. To be considered for inclusion in the book, please send submissions by March 31, 2005. Stories will also be accepted for the online gallery throughout the fall.

Visit www.daywoman.com to share your story and learn more about the project.

By Michael Connelly

FBI agent Rachel Walling finally gets the call she's dreaded for years, the one that tells her the Poet has surfaced. She has never forgotten the serial killer who wove lines of poetry in his hideous crimes-and apparently he has not forgotten her. Former LAPD detective Harry Bosch gets a call, too-from the widow of an old friend. Her husband's death seems natural, but his ties to the hunt for the Poet make Bosch dig deep. Arriving at a derelict spot in the California desert where the feds are unearthing bodies, Bosch joins forces with Rachel. Now the two are at odds with the FBI...and squarely in the path of the Poet, who will lead them on a wicked ride out of the heat, through the narrows of evil, and into a darkness all his own… Read an Excerpt
